Запутанное словоупотребление

Если исходить из классического текста, то на каком-то этапе нибелунгами стали почему-то называться бургунды, сопровождавшие короля Гюнтера ко двору Этцеля. Отсюда известное выражение - "верность нибелунгов", дескать, предпочли все погибнуть, но не выдать Хагена.
Но подробностей не помню, надо текст внимательно перечитать, иначе непонятен этот перенос значения.
Может, феодальные штучки? Раз владеют сокровищем нибелунгов, то и есть Нибелунги?
