The history of the present Principality of Liechtenstein can be traced back a long way. There is evidence of settlement during the Neolithic period from around 5000 B.C.

In 1806 Liechtenstein was brought into the Rhine Confederation by Napoleon. At that time Napoleon was founding a union of 16 constituent states of the former Holy Roman Empire. which recognised him as protector. He formally granted them independence. In this way Liechtenstein too became a sovereign state
