JAKARTA (AFX) - The military has proposed to the defence ministry the cancellation of plans to purchase Russian Sukhoi fighter jets in favor of cargo planes and helicopters suitable for relief efforts, officials said.
Defence Minister Yuwono Sudarsono said last month's tsunami disaster in Sumatra island's Aceh province highlighted the shortage of transport planes such as helicopters and Hercules C-130s.
He said the armed forces, or TNI, had decided to withdraw its proposal to buy the Sukhoi fighters for non-combat aircraft.
'The TNI has proposed that the budget that was initially for the Sukhois, be shifted for transportation, especially helicopters and Hercules C-130,' Sudarsono said.
He said with the new proposal, the defence ministry would abandon three earlier demands submitted for parliamentary approval.
Indonesia has purchased two Sukhoi SU-27s and two Sukhoi SU-30s and Mi-35 helicopters from Russia under a countertrade arrangement in April 23.
The airplanes and helicopters were delivered last year but the military has submitted proposals to the parliament to buy up to eight more Sukhoi planes, enough to make a squadron.
