North Korea grounds Y-5 fleet

North Korea has grounded its fleet of 200 Yunshuji-5 (Y-5) aircraft due to a lack of fuel.

The Y-5, a Chinese licence-built version of the Antonov An-2, is a single-engined general-purpose biplane and is the largest biplane in service

The prototype AN-2 flew as SKh-1 on 31 August 1947. More than 5,000 were built at Kiev with production ending in mid-1960s after limited manufacture of the specialised agricultural An-2M variant. Production was then transferred to PZL Mielec, Poland, from where more than 11,950 have been delivered since 1960. China acquired the licence and has built the Y-5 version since 1957.

Military versions of the An-2 are in service with the armed forces of the following countries: Angola (10); Armenia (six); Bosnia-Herzegovina (one); Bulgaria (one); Croatia (two); Cuba (19); Estonia (one); Georgia (six); Laos (10); Latvia (12); Lithuania (10); Macedonia (two); Mali (two); Moldova (10); Mongolia (five to 10); Nicaragua (two); Poland (28); Romania (17); Russian Federation (180-185); Ukraine (50); United States (one).
