Paris Air Show: Air Tractor offers light attack/COIN variant of AT-802

Air Tractor has developed a light-attack/counter-insurgency (COIN) variant of its AT-802 agricultural crop-spraying aircraft, which has debuted at the Paris Air Show 2009.

According to the company, the two-seat AT-802U has been especially "configured for a military direct fire support role in asymmetrical warfare theatres of operation" and is being marketed as a COIN, close air support and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform.

It will be configured with dual 12.7 mm GAU-19/A three-barrel Gatling guns, M260 rocket launchers and representative Mk 82 bombs. In addition, it can also be configured to carry more advanced weapon systems such as the Lockheed Martin Hellfire II and Direct-Attack Guided Rocket (DAGR) laser-guided rockets as well as Sniper XR surveillance and targeting pod systems.

Communications equipment includes the Wulfsberg Flexcomm tactical modular multi-band airborne FM/AM radio system to enable the pilot to maintain secure radio communications with practically any radio system used by ground units.

The aircraft's sensor fit comprises an infrared (IR) camera and turret system with a secure video downlink. The downlink system will be ROVER (Remotely Operated Video Enhanced Receiver) compatible, allowing the aircraft to transmit the live video feed to a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) on the ground.

The AT-802U's cockpit-forward payload area is configurable for an auxiliary fuel tank. Additionally, drop tanks can be added on wing/fuselage hard-points to provide loiter times of more than 10 hours.

The tandem-seat cockpit is armoured to provide the crew with ballistic protection and the aircraft is fitted with the AN/AAR-47/ALE-47 countermeasures suite for protection against IR missile threats. Other features to increase aircraft survivability include self-sealing fuel tanks and fuel tank shut-off, an inflatable restraint system for the pilot and a strengthened airframe.

Ruggedised fixed landing gear and a proven Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67F 1600 SHP turbine engine equipped with a high dust environment air induction system gives the AT-802U a rough-field operating capability. The aircraft's low logistical footprint and minimal need for ground support equipment allows it to operate from austere operating bases close to the front line.

The AT-802U's 16,000 lb (7,257 kg) gross weight provides a payload of more than 8,000 lb for crew, fuel and weapons.
